DHL adds Jakarta to its dedicated Air Network

Now serves 24 destinations in Asia Pacific

DHL today announced the launch of a dedicated overnight express service between Singapore and Jakarta, bringing to 24 the total number of destinations served in Asia Pacific. This new service will commence on 17 February 2004.

The four-times weekly new service will be operated on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday using a Boeing 737-200 freighter with a payload capacity of 13 and a half tonnes. This new service to Jakarta makes it the first city in Southeast Asia's most populous country to have direct connections to Singapore, and the 24th destination in DHL's dedicated air network in Asia Pacific.

DHL's regional air network currently consists of 34 dedicated cargo services daily, in addition to over 800 commercial flights per day. This allows capital cities and other major business centers to be interconnected through DHL's regional hubs and gateways, providing DHL's customers with overnight services across Asia and the Pacific. The cities directly connected to Singapore by dedicated freighter aircraft now include Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Delhi (commencing 28th March 2004).

John Mullen, Chief Operating Officer, DHL - Asia Pacific, said: "This new development will enable DHL to capture the increasing demand for express delivery service in Jakarta's business and financial centers, as well as leverage the opportunities arising from growing intra-Asia Pacific traffic. Indonesia, which is the worlds fourth most populous country is expected to be an important part of DHL's ongoing investment in our Asia-Pacific network."

The overnight flight will operate according to the following schedule:

Depart from: Jakarta
Departure Time (Local): 0030
Arrive at: Singapore
Arrival Time (Local): 0310

Depart from: Singapore

The new Jakarta service will also connect via Singapore with a recent development announcement by DHL and Lufthansa Cargo, under which they will have joint initiatives on five new international routes to be introduced from 28th March 2004. Two of the new routes include destinations in the Asia Pacific network. They are:

  • Cologne - Bahrain - Singapore - Delhi - Cologne

  • Cologne - Hong Kong - Sharjah - Cologne - Bergamo - East Midlands

The Asia Pacific accounted for 38.8 million express shipments sent in 2003, and continues to be a vital part of DHL's global network.
