Tomorrow, Saturday, the new DHL Solutions logistics centre, built for its customer Johnson & Johnson GmbH and equipped with modern technology, will be officially opened at the Fürst Hardenberg logistics park in Dortmund. DHL Solutions GmbH, merged from Danzas Logistics and Danzas TeleLog, has been a logistics partner of Johnson & Johnson for ten years. It was awarded the contract for the new logistics centre further to a European invitation to tender in mid-2001. The operation of this new European logistics platform for Johnson & Johnson's consumer goods area will serve to further expand the partnership.

Many factors speak in favour of Fürst Hardenberg as location: it offers an ideal connection to all means of transport and is attractively positioned for transport to the sales markets and production sites of the consumer goods manufacturer. What is more, the land offers sufficient space to manage the greater capacity needed for Johnson & Johnson. Built up on the former mining site were 19,500 square metres of building surface, some 6,400 square metres more than on the prior Schwerte logistics location. The warehouse has 24 gates, 34,392 pallet spaces as well as a platform of around 1,600 square metres. The entire project was developed by both partners so as to ensure that all the customer's needs were met.

The new centre should be gradually expanded to become Johnson & Johnson's European logistics platform. Logistics services which are currently provided at diverse locations will be consolidated in Dortmund. The product supply for Austria and Switzerland should be linked up by the end of 2004. In addition to some 90 existing positions, the expansion along with all integration activities should create 30 further jobs.

As operator of the centre, DHL Solutions covers all aspects of supply chain management. In the process, information technology acts as the backbone of the supply chain. The warehouse was therefore equipped with modern technology. Mobile data technology for forklift control as well as voucherless order picking are integrated in line with standards. It is thus ensured that the solution developed for Johnson & Johnson corresponds to the company's very high quality standards for supplying its customers and end-consumers.

Johnson & Johnson was founded in 1886 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Worldwide, its current staff strength stands at more than 100,000 in around 50 countries. Its business areas range from cosmetic to medical and diagnostic up to pharmaceutical products. Johnson & Johnson employs around 700 staff in Germany in the consumer goods area.
